Gil
Bruvel
Discover the original sculptures of Gil Bruvel, the Sydney-born French artist, at the OA Fine Art galleries in Paris. Trained by his father, a cabinetmaker, and now based in Austin, he stacks thousands of wooden sticks, or polishes stainless steel, until the material takes on the movement of a face or a current.

Wooden sticks,
a face
Gil Bruvel, born in Sydney in 1959 and raised in France, learned wood in the workshop of his father, a cabinetmaker. Now based in Austin, Texas, he has devoted himself to sculpture since the 1980s and is among the most recognisable contemporary sculptors, shown in galleries and private collections across the United States, Europe and Asia.
The masks
Thousands of wooden sticks assembled one by one, then painted: their cut ends compose the relief. Seen head on, a face appears; from the side, it breaks into strata. That shift of the gaze is what makes the work.
Stainless steel
The Wind, River: the model is cast, then the surface polished until light travels across it instead of settling on it. These pieces are editions of thirty-five, numbered and signed.
The volumes
Cubic #4, Flowing, Bearbrick #8: the same language of sticks, carried into the round. Set on a pedestal, they reveal themselves as you walk around them.
