Who is
Taher Jaoui?
Born in 1978 in Tunis, Taher Jaoui is a contemporary artist known for abstract compositions in which colour, geometric form and the gesture of urban art answer one another. A Sorbonne graduate in 2007, first committed to a scientific career, he came to painting in 2013 through collages of old photographs. He lives and works in Madrid today.
An abstraction fed by mathematics
His painting is recognisable by its assemblies of layered forms, its broad gestures and its signs borrowed from mathematical formulas. Spray paint, charcoal, chalk, oil and acrylic accumulate on the raw canvas: the surface keeps the physical trace of the energy spent on it. His gesture is a matter of controlled chance — the canvas is turned, the orientation changes, until every element finds its balance.
International recognition
His works have been shown in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States, in solo as well as group exhibitions: galerie Saltiel in Paris, LT Gallery in Beirut, Maune Contemporary in Atlanta, Jason Shin Gallery in Seoul. They are held in many private and public collections around the world.
His influences
Primitive African art, graffiti, glitch art, the COBRA movement, and the attitude of post-war abstract expressionism: these sources converge into a language where spontaneity and structure do not exclude one another. His background in computing and mathematics remains legible in the rigour underlying every composition.
